“When we, comedians of la Comédie-Française, stage plays, we consciously feel this desire to show off this theatre of ours, to show everyone why we love it and why we want to be here.” With these words in mind, award-winning director, stage and cinema actor Denis Podalydès takes over the historical stage. Opera buffa, tragedy, romantic drama, symbolist poetry, slapstick comedy… all genres are called upon to give life to this staging of one of the most emblematic texts of the French repertoire!

Denis Podalydès took over the historical stage of the Salle Richelieu with Cyrano de Bergerac, one of the biggest hits in the history of the Comédie-Française. One of today’s most celebrated French actor sees the play as “a dream of total theatre, a mixture of arts and genres: comic opera, tragedy, romantic drama, symbolist poetry and Molieresque farce“.

The staging finds its roots in these diverse genres and registers of performance to create a whole that is eclectic and coherent at once, a funny, moving and dreamlike tribute to all forms of performing arts.

Octave and Léandre’s amorous intentions are thwarted by two authoritarian fathers who have just returned from a trip with determined to marry their sons to two strangers. They young men turn to the wily Scapin for help, placing their fate in his hands.

Beatings with a stick, an avalanche of stratagems and other tricks set the tempo of this Molière play that has truly earned its place as one of the playwright’s essential creations.
